The philosopher Cheng Zi said:- “Without inclination to either side is called
Zhung: when no change is admitted is called Yung.” The Chinese word ‘Zhung’
means the middle, and it denotes the correct course to be pursued; and Yung denotes
the fixed principle regulating all under heaven.
This work which contains the principle of how the mind works was handed down
in the Confucian School until it reached Zi Si, who feared that errors might arise over
long period of time; and he put it down in writing and then delivered the work of Mencius.
The book first mentioned one principle; then it spreads out and embraces all things.
It finally returns and gather them under one principle. Unroll it and it fills the universe.
If you roll it up, it lies hidden in mysteriousness. The work has an attractive quality which
is inexhaustible. The whole thing is solid learning. If a skilful reader has explored and
apprehended it, he may carry it into practice throughout his whole life and find it
inexhaustible.
