This book presents in vivid detail descriptions of the seven states of existence as the
Buddha claims in various scriptures: hells exist, birth as animals, hungry ghosts,
heavenly beings, humans, karma, and the middle stage between two incarnations exist.
Luo Qian-Ren focuses his lectures on the why and how Tao cultivators should cultivate
themselves to bring about the most rapid progress through what is called “cultivating blessings
and wisdom at the same time” in Buddhism, or “being a sage internally to rule externally”
in Confucian teachings. From the outset, Luo Qian-Ren makes an immediate connection
between the world where humans live and the seven states of existence.
He emphasizes the fact that this abode is only temporary for all sentient beings, holy or secular,
to live while the “thoughts they cherish in their minds” will manifest as different tendencies
and become the gravitational force of karma causes which will eventually pull each and every
individual to the corresponding existence to experience various types of destinies. It is for
this reason, as Luo Qian-Ren stresses, that truthful Tao cultivation should start and end with
the working of one’s own mind and consciousness, in order to transcend rounds of birth and
end cycles of death.
