The Book of the Great Learning was extracted from the Book of Ceremonies and Rites (禮記)
by Si Mar Guan (司馬光), and then was divided into chapters and sections by
Master Chu Si (朱熹夫子). The Great Learning was dictated to Tzen Tze (曾子) by Confucius (孔子).
This book will inspired the future generations to realize their true nature and fully utilize the
true nature. This book is a confidential transmission for going through the gate to become a saint.
It is a way of being perfect in cultivating oneself (rectifying oneself, establishing oneself) and also
cultivating the others (rectifying others, establishing others).
After the three dynasties of Hsia, Shang and Chou, it was very popular for the people to study.
Up to eight years old, from the sons of the King to the sons of the common people all attended
slight learning (小學) which taught cleaning house, manners of dealing with people and
six skills (六藝) which are rites (禮), music (樂), shooting (射), driving (御), classic of history (書經)
and numbers (數). Up to 15 years old, from the sons of the Emperor to the sons of the Duke,
great officers, scholars and outstanding common people all attended Great Learning. The subjects
are to carry our knowledge to the utmost, to rectify our hearts, to cultivate ourselves and to govern
states. All the content of the Great Learning will be explained in detail, hereafter.
